Resveratrol and Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis afflicts over 4 million people in the US. It is an autoimmune disease that effectively destroys connective joint tissues with attendant pain, swelling and stiffness that make it a painful challenge for people to move around.

Now what has Resveratrol got to do with RA? The antioxidant phytoalexin found in red wines that accounted for the French Paradox has found it way on diet supplements that make it the wonder drug of the century. Does it have any preventive or curative properties for rheumatoid arthritis as well?

Research Findings: Resveratrol vs Rheumatoid Arthritis

Resveratrol’s anti-carcinogenic and chemopreventive properties are well documented. Its apoptic action on certain types of cancer cells has made headlines on the promise of emerging new cancer treatment. In addition, it has antioxidant properties as well as inhibiting action on cyclo-oxygenase enzymes, protein kinase and  matrix metalloproteinase considered useful in preventing tumor growth and other chronic diseases.

A recent study conducted by a team of scientists at the Chungnam national University in Daejeon, Korea and from various other researchers in the academe has taken to task Resveratrol’s role in its apoptotic action on rheumatoid fibroblast-like synovioctes or FLS in patients with RA.

RA inflames synovial lining and destroys adjacent bone and cartilage. The inflamed synvoiums contains synovial fibroblast tissues that when inflamed causes abnormal immune conditions in the joint. The results of the study indicated the activation of caspase-9 that trigger Resveratrol’s apoptotic signaling in the mitochondrial pathway in RA FLS reduces the severity of cartilage lesions and synovial inflammation in RA.

It suggests that Resveratrol activates caspase-8 to modulate mitochondrial apoptic mechanism to kill RA FLS. While further tests are needed to confirm and evaluate the toxicity and necessary dosage of Resveratrol, the current study opens up Resveratrol as a viable medical treatment strategy for patients with RA by targeting their mitochondrial caspase pathway.
