Recent research has hinted that Resveratrol can be an effective treatment for psoriasis
lesions, acne eczema and other exfoliative skin disorders. Resveratrol has been well-
But recent tests have shown that none of these properties account for its success as a topical application in the form of lotions, creams and ointments in treating exfoliate skin diseases.
Preferred in conjunction with vitamin D and corticoids, it has exhibited successful topical treatment of psoriasis and with vitamin A to treat skin dystrophic disorders associated with dermal scaling.
Psoriasis is a common inflammatory skin disorder characterized by excessive scaling affecting about 2% of the US population. Its origins remain unclear but could be traced to abnormal keratinocytes function or immune disorders.
Current therapies include topical and systemic treatment but all of them exact significant side effects that often cause discontinuation of the treatment. Topical creams with coaltar induce photosensitization while those with steroids, vitamin D3 and retinoids cause are teratogenic. Systemic drugs like cyclosporine and other immunosuppressant drugs have considerable toxicity.
Clinical tests on human patients indicated that all the subjects treated with ointment containing 1% Resveratrol compared to those in the control group without showed rapid decrease in their symptoms to 50% during the first 2 weeks of treatment. 80% of the patents showed remarkable improvements while only 20% showed acceptable improvements while none in the control group exhibited any improvement at all.
In all the subjects, no unwanted side effects were noted. In contrast to current treatment of exfoliative skin disorders, Resveratrol has no systemic or topical side effects during and after treatment. None of the observed therapeutic action of Resveratrol figured during the treatment.
