Resveratrol and Pancreatic Cancer

Resveratrol has made its mark as the miracle drug of the 21st century with scores of medical and scientific research studies attesting to its efficacy in treating most deadly diseases and promoting a healthy body. Its anti-carcinogenic properties are well-documented with repeated undeniable results in most types of cancer cells. Treating pancreatic cancers is now one of them.

Research Claims

In a 2008 research conducted by a team of multi-

disciplinary scientists at the P. Willmot Cancer Center

and the Department of Radiation Oncology of the

University of Rochester Medical Center, the Resveratrol antioxidant found in red wine and grape skins have been found to destroy pancreatic tumor cells. Its anti-carcinogenic action revolves around disabling the cell’s mitochondrion that is sustaining the offending tumor cell.

Pancreatic cancer cells have been known to be problematic and resistant to chemotherapy. Researchers have discovered that Resveratrol depolarized the mitochondrial membranes in pancreatic tumor cells disabling its ability to supply energy to the cancer cell – an activity that chemotherapy could not do.

The laboratory experiments used cultured pancreatic cancer cells in vitro and treated with 50 mg/ml of Resveratrol in combination of ionizing radiation with a control set without Resveratrol. The results showed that Resveratrol:

•  Reduced proteins in the pancreatic cells that rendered chemotherapy ineffective, making the tumor cells chemo-sensitive;

•  Triggered the production of ROS or reactive Oxygen Species which causes apoptosis in cancer cells, and

•  Damaged the tumor cell mitochondria, decreasing the tumor cell’s ability to survive and function.

All these action taken when combined with radiation and chemotherapy can theoretically cause complete remission from pancreatic cancer. While independent studies are needed to confirm and duplicate these findings prior to any trials on human cancer patients, the research results indicate that Resveratrol holds a promising treatment for pancreatic cancer.
