Resveratrol and Ovarian Cancer

 

The anti-oxidant phytochemical found in red wine, grape skins and berries, Resveratrol, has reached near iconic status with a host of curative and therapeutic benefits to make it the wonder drug of the century. Ever since its initial tests that showed promising results, Resveratrol has figured in countless medical research in the academe and the pharmaceutical industries to confirm those initial results. One of these promised benefits is its anti-carcinogenic properties that inhibit the growth of tumor cells in certain types of cancer.

 

 

Glucose Deprivation in Ovarian Cancer Treatment

 

Recent research work done at the University of Michigan has discovered Resveratrol’s anti-neoplastic activity that induces autophagic cell death or type II programmed cell destruction in ovarian cancer cells in vivo.  

 

This is similar to the action of conventional chemotherapy which induces apoptotic self-destruction in both healthy and cancer cells. Cancer tells are known to exhibit high rates of glycolysis compared to normal healthy cells and are easily killed by glucose deprivation.

 

The tests initially aimed to confirm if Resveratrol’s induced autophagic action is due to glucose inhibition. The result shows that Resveratrol deprived ovarian cancer cells the glucose they need to survive and induced tumor cell death in 24 hours from administration. Resveratrol inhibited glucose uptake and glucose receptor translocation from the cancer cell to healthy cells.

 

The conclusions on the results of the tests are most promising. Resveratrol is effective in inhibiting glucose uptake in ovarian tumor cells and thus induce autophagocytosis. In addition, Resveratrol has the ability to circumvent cell resistance developed in apoptotic signaling due to chemotherapeutic cell alterations and promises to be effective against chemoresistant diseases.

 

Because ovarian cancer cells depend on glucose to survive, any action to inhibit glycolysis or glucose uptake can cause their death. Resveratrol’s unmistakable action to deprive ovarian cancer cells of glucose has the promise to provide therapeutic value for patients suffering ovarian cancer.
