Resveratrol and Multiple Sclerosis

Resveratrol is a naturally produced polyphenolic phytochemical compound found in red wines, grape skins, berries and in about 70 other plant species. It has well-researched and documented health enhancing properties as well as curative promise in a wide variety of deadly diseases that include skin, breast and colon cancers, cardiovascular and arterial diseases, diabetes, obesity, Alzheimer’s disease and even flu.

In a research paper presented at the World Congress on Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis held in Montreal in Sept 2008, scientists from the University of Utah headed by Ikuo Tsunudo, M.D described the promising effect of Resveratrol on multiple sclerosis (MS). It had been postulated that Resveratrol may help prevent axonal degeneration found in multiple sclerosis and verifying this was the aim of the research.

Multiple Sclerosis, MS for short and also known as disseminated sclerosis or encephalomyelitis disseminate, is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system, in attacking the central nervous system, causes a debilitating demyelization that can lead to a host of mental and physical symptoms characterized by a progressive physical and cognitive impairment and eventual total loss.

Research Findings: Resveratrol vs Multiple Sclerosis

Conducted to lab rats with a control group, a low lose 0.04% Resveratrol was infused in the diet of female mice with MS-like Theiler’s murine encephalomyelitis virus more commonly called Wallerian degeneration – an animal counterpart of MS. It was observed that the mice gained weight. No effect on the nerve cell tissues were observed after a 5-week treatment.

The researchers concluded that weight gain may be indicative of Resveratrol induced positive effects that hints on its potential as an MS cure. This is a speculated conclusion considering that MS causes weight loss.

It was noted in the presentation that more research is needed to independently confirm the results and pave the way for a more intensive clinical trial on human patients if warranted.
