Resveratrol and Lupus

When the body’s own immune system attacks its own organs and tissues as if they were foreign matter, you get a chronic inflammatory disorder called Lupus Erythematosus. Different physiological organs and systems get inflamed notably the kidneys, muscle joints, blood cells, the heart and lungs.

It strikes women more frequently than men. Afflicting nearly 1.5 million Americans and another 5 million worldwide, lupus has no cure and treatment is often difficult but not impossible.

Treatment involves suppressing the body’s immune system so that the organs and tissues are not

irreparably damaged, but not to the point where the body gets susceptible to infections the immune system should be getting rid of.

Resveratrol’s Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Recent studies conducted by scientist from Singapore and Scotland had clearly established the anti-inflammatory properties of the red wine extract Resveratrol – another of its growing health promise in the areas of anti-aging, disease and cancer prevention.

The new research result published in the August 2009 issue of The FASEB Journal points to Resveratrol’s potential in treating deadly inflammatory disorders such as appendicitis, peritonitis and systemic sepsis. The finding opens up new hopes for the emergence of a new breed of Resveratrol-based formulation that is more effective than any corticosteroids currently used to treat Lupus but with debilitating side effects.

The study was conducted with lab mice and its positive results were encouraging. No mention has been made of systemic lupus which similarly falls under the category of inflammatory diseases. But researchers are hopeful that further tests can be conducted to independently confirm its anti-inflammatory properties and farther explore its potential as a lupus treatment.

Resveratrol found in red wines is a polyphenol substance naturally occurring in about 70 plant species with the Muscadine red grape skin have the most abundant concentration. There are now hundreds of food supplements that carry Resveratrol in varying concentrations and it has been registered with the FDA as an experimental new drug.
