Resveratrol and Kidney Disease

The red wine polyphenolic extract Resveratrol has been making waves with its promised health and therapeutic benefits revealed and independently confirmed in various research studies worldwide. First exposed to the world in the early 90s as the answer to the French Paradox explaining for their healthier and longer lives despite consuming the same levels of high fat diet that has been causing heart diseases among Americans, Resveratrol is now in hundreds of food supplements and have reached celebrity status extolled in the media.

Resveratrol’s anti-carcinogenic, antioxidant, and anti-aging  properties have been well researched

and documented in countless studies to check and confirm its efficacy which while limited to lab rats and other animals, promise new ways to treat some of the most deadly disorders that have plagued mankind. One of them is kidney disease that has been shown to respond positively to Resveratrol treatment.

Research Findings: Resveratrol vs Kidney Disease

A 2007 study from a team of scientists at the Departments of Physiology and Pathology at the University of Sao Paul in Brazil showed that the red wine extract ameliorated glycerol-induced renal injury by suppressing inflammation and inhibiting lipid peroxidation. This further confirmed Resveratrol’s anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties.

Another research conducted at the Pharmacology Division of the University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Chandigarh, India showed promising Resveratrol treatment of rhabdonyolysis-induced myoglobinuric acute renal failure (ARF) which is essentially the same as glycerol-induced acute renal failure that accounts for 10% to 40% of all ARF cases.

A 5-10 mg/kg Resveratrol concentrate administered to lab rats prior to glycerol injection  significantly attenuated renal dysfunction, reduced nitric oxide levels, reduced thiobarbituric acids and restored depleted antioxidant enzymes in kidneys.

These promising results indicate father corroborative tests are needed. Subsequent clinical trials in human patients are often the last step before Resveratrol can secure FDA approval as a safe and effective treatment of renal diseases. This will take some time but the tests clearly pave the way for future new treatment strategies for some of the deadliest ailments.
