Resveratrol and Heart Diseases

 

The wonder chemical compound Resveratrol found in red wine accounted for the French Paradox where red wines allowed the French to live longer and healthier despite consuming unhealthy fatty foods that cause heart diseases in Americans.  

 

This a polyphenolic compound produced in plants like red grape skins and seeds which are used in red wines as well as peanuts, cranberries and blueberries, to mention a few, have exhibited therapeutic properties that greatly prevent cardiovascular diseases.

Resveratrol Inhibits Platelet Aggregation

 

Blood clots can cause coronary or cerebral arterial thrombosis resulting in myocardial infarction or stroke. The most commonly observed cause is a condition called platelet aggregation or the increased stickiness of blood. Resveratrol has been shown to inhibit platelet aggregation in vitro lab tests with culture blood cell platelets.

 

 

Resveratrol Stimulates Endolethelial Nitric Oxide Synthase (eNOS)

 

This is an enzyme that encourages or catalyzes the production of nitric oxides in vascular endothelial cells. These oxides maintain arterial relaxation or more commonly vasodilatation that improves and maintains a healthy blood circulation as well as blood pressure. Impaired nitric oxide production in NO-dependent vasodilatation increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Clinical in vitro tests of cultured endothelial cells demonstrate Resveratrol’s ability to stimulate eNOS activity.

 

 

Resveratrol Inhibits Vascular Cell Adhesion

 

The risk of contracting myocardial infarction or heart attack increases with several measures of inflammatory atherosclerosis. One of the earliest stages in the formation of atherosclerosis is the adhesion of inflammatory white blood cells to the arterial wall of blood vessels. Resveratrol inhibits the expression of such adhesion in various tests using cultured in vitro endothelial cells.
