Resveratrol and Hair Loss

The commerce of treating hair loss is littered with countless drugs and food supplements as well as home-grown herbal concoctions that promise to rid mankind of the disquieting and unnerving problem of hair loss in both sexes.

The fact is that, there is no cure for hair loss as the predisposition to baldness is a genetic condition called androgenetic alopecia which could only be solved be a suitable gene therapy that is still generations away despite the completion of the Human Genome Project.

What can be done medicinally is to arrest hair loss with drugs that reduce the enzyme 5-Alpha reductase in converting the hormone testosterone into DHT or Dihydrotestosterone in the scalp that is known to destroy hair follicles.

Hair Loss Treating Using Resveratrol

It is unfortunate that not all the known drugs that promise hair growth do their job effectively in the short time people need to grow back hair or without having to be a slave to it for the rest of their lives. Discontinuing any of these medications can only mean a restoration of their hair loss problems. It is clear that any new treatment strategy to combat hair loss and induce growth is always welcome. One area that holds promise is the use of Resveratrol.

Resveratrol is a polyphenol extract in red wines that has lately achieved celebrity media attention for its versatile health benefits corroborated in various research studies around the world. Its anti-oxidative properties have been shown to do wonders in delaying and slowing the aging process. A recent study has demonstrated that it has synergy with another polyphenol extract from the Indian spice turmeric called Curcumin that together, can arrest hair loss and restore hair growth.

The benefit comes from the combined anti-inflammatory properties of both compounds and their stimulation of nerve cells in hair follicles which release neuropeptides Neurokinin A and the Calcitonin Gene Related Peptide (CGRP) associated with hair regrowth.

Further studies to verify the efficacy of Resveratrol in combination with Curcumin are underway and it should be just a matter of time to get them to market. There’s already an Italian company that has filed a patent for a supplement containing both substances it plans to market as a hair growth treatment.
