Resveratrol and Fatty Liver

Back in November of 2008, a team of researchers from the University of South Florida reported that the phytochemical Resveratrol found in red wines administered in alcohol-drunk lab rats reduced the fatty liver condition commonly found in men suffering from chronic alcoholism.

It diminished the fatty deposits produced in the liver and even enhanced the liver’s metabolic rates to break down fat. It’s a known fact that excessive alcohol intake increased fat to build up and create all sorts of problems for the liver and cause its eventual failure.

From this study, it looks like Resveratrol confirms it’s ability to enhance the fat metabolism in the body the way it has shown in reducing calorie uptake when taking in high fat high cholesterol diet that accounted for the French Paradox with the French people’s traditional love for red wines on their table.

Research Results: Resveratrol vs Fatty Liver

The research findings had been published in The American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology. Those drunk lab rats given a dose of Resveratrol were found to have less fat in their livers as they get broken down faster than drunk lab rats in the control group not given Resveratrol. It was also confirmed that Resveratrol activated certain molecules that are important in metabolizing fat in the liver which are normally inhibited with alcohol abuse. Lab rats treated with Resveratrol were also found to have enhanced activity of these same fat-burning molecules.

The study needs to be corroborated in subsequent independent research with possible human trials before Resveratrol gets the necessary FDA nod as a safe and effective treatment for liver ailments resulting from excessive alcohol intake.

But it’s plain that Resveratrol has the promise to give alcohol drinkers a safety net. The researches have also concluded that Resveratrol taken together with alcohol “could be a more potent and efficient way” to getting its promised health benefits.
