Resveratrol and Fat Loss

The UK is in dire need to develop anti-obesity or fat-loss treatments soon as studies have clearly shown that about a third of UK woman are overweight. Statistics show that there are 1,000 deaths every week due to obesity. While nothing really beat lifestyle changes that lower the consumption of unhealthy food, the withdrawal of the anti-obesity pill rimonabant, better known by the brand Acomplia from the shelves have left the population with fewer options that really work. But soon, a new fat-loss treatment could be up in the horizon.

French scientists from the University of Louis Pasteur claim to have discovered a drug that can burn off fat  even in the presence of a high-fat diet. Tests made under controlled laboratory conditions found the drug-infused lab rats to be protected against weight gain and insulin resistance.

Lab Findings: Resveratrol vs Fat Loss

The drug SRTI720 is a compound from the red wine extract Resveratrol. It targets the protein SIRT1 which is considered an anti-aging compound. Earlier studies have demonstrated Resveratrol’s ability to counter the effects of a high calorie diet via SIRT1.

But tests with the lab rats indicate that humans will need gallons of red wine to get the same benefits. Scientists have observed that low doses of the drug partially inhibited weight gain on a high fat diet after 20 weeks of daily treatment. They created a drug with higher and more potent concentration of Resveratrol to target SIRT1 and immediately observed effective prevention of weight gain. It also improved the lab rat’s blood sugar levels and insulin sensitivity which are necessary to ward off diabetes.

The mice exhibited no side effects but the researches cautioned that further studies are necessary to confirm the drug’s efficacy and safety for humans. Other members of the academe are investigating SIRT1 action similar to the SRT1520 that had been developed by Sirtris Pharmaceuticals.
