Resveratrol and Diabetes

Ever since the French Paradox has been solved with the confirmation on the therapeutic benefits of the red wine molecule Resveratrol, researchers in universities and pharmaceutical labs around the world have been busy studying its various health giving promises.

Various studies have pointed to its potential as a diabetic cure and is the subject of further tests to affirm these initial positive results.

Early Findings

In 1999, researcher studies showed that mice treated

with low levels of Resveratrol concentrates improved their insulin sensitivity and opened up new possibilities for developing new therapies for preventing and reversing type-2 diabetic conditions.

These type of diabetes is insulin-resistant that block the natural activation of the Sirtuin or SIRT1 proteins. Resveratrol has been shown to activate Sirtuin that is associated not only to insulin secretion but insulin sensitivity as well.

The Brain, Diabetes and Resveratrol

A new study soon to be published in the Endocrinology journal of The Endocrine Society essays a new strategy for treating diabetes that paves the way for targeting the brain to trigger Resveratrol’s anti-diabetic properties.

Little was known about the action of the protein group Sirtuin until now when it has been established to exist in the brain to govern glucose metabolism. This is confirmed by Dr. Roberto Coppari, PhD of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and co-writer of the research paper to be published in the journal.

It is now a known fact that Resveratrol activates Sirtuins. Again, using lab mice with diabetic conditions, an infusion of Resveratrol activated Sirtuins in their brain resulting in high levels of blood sugar and insulin.

Knowing that the brain mediates the anti-diabetic action of Resveratrol, the  pharmaceutical industry can now develop Sirtuin activators that target the brain to treat type-2 diabetes without affecting other body organs which could be adversely affected in activating Sirtuin.
