A lot has been said about colon cancer as the 3rd leading cancer deaths in both men and women in the country. Cell mutations that activate the Wnt pathway common in colon cancer is seen in about 85% of colon cancer patients. Any cure will have to revolve around inhibiting the formation of Wnt pathway in colon. Resveratrol is known to inhibit cancerous cell proliferation and induce early cell death or apoptosis in cancer cells.
Researchers at the University of California have started looking into the effect of low concentrations of Resveratrol on the Wnt signaling pathway activated in over 85% of colon cancer cases. The findings were encouraging to say the least. They revealed that low concentrations significantly reduced Wnt signaling throughput in colon cells that remarkably reduced the initiation and promotion of tumors in colon cells.
Red wines contain 5 to 13 micromoles of Resveratrol per liter. That means a glass of Pinot Noir red wine per day is enough to prevent cancer. The studies suggest that Resveratrol in low concentrations exhibited excellent chemopreventive qualities that were never suspected before. The studies provide convincing evidence that low Resveratrol concentrations in food supplementation can prevent the onset of tumorous cell growth.
Other clinical trials such as those undertaken by the University of Nebraska confirmed the result even on breast cancer. But more clinical tests especially on humans are needed to verify its efficacy and determine the right dosage for human use.
