Resveratrol and Brain Cancer

Resveratrol’s anti-carcinogenic properties have been well-documented in a number of clinical research studies but these tests were conducted in lab animals, specifically mice, with some results more promising than others. Human trials are still in the works to determine the right concentration and dosage the can prevent and control the spread of certain types of cancer.

It is a sad fact that the prognosis of patients suffering the most common brain tumor – glioma, is very poor. Multidisciplinary strategies for treating the cancer like surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy can only do so much to prolong life expectancy which is typically under a years from time of diagnosis with a survival rate of only 5.5% over a five year period. There is no let-up in finding a more effective treatment strategy for malignant brain cancer. Resveratrol is a promise in that direction.

Resveratrol Treatment in Brain Cancer

With intracerebral glioma cancer cells induced in the brain of lab mice, Resveratrol showed time-bound cytotonic effects and apoptosis of cancer cells on a concentration of 40 mg per day and exhibited antitumor effects and slower tumor spread rates with concomitant longer subject survival time and high survival rates.

It was also demonstrated that the higher the Resveratrol concentration or dosage coupled with a longer drug exposure time, the more tumor cells became apoptotic. The action of its antitumor properties was traced to its inhibition of glioma-induced angiogenesis.

Resveratrol’s apoptotic effects which induce the death of cancer cells at certain concentrations have been known as one of its main action in controlling cancer growth.

The clinical findings are clear and quite promising. Resveratrol can be considered a possible potent cancer treatment option. But as in previous tests that show similar promising results on lab animals, further clinical studies are needed to confirm its curative efficacy in human patients with brain tumors.
