Resveratrol and Birth Control

The modern wonder substance found in red wines and grape skins Resveratrol has been shown to posses excellent health-promoting and therapeutic properties at the cellular level that can effectively slow down the aging process.

Many of these studies also provide a body of evidence that it has anti-carcinogenic properties in some types of cancer cells at higher doses. Its main benefit is reducing cholesterol levels that account for the French paradox we’ve heard about.

For those who haven’t, it’s a paradox of eating more fatty foods and still gets healthier and longer lives compared with Americans who consume as much. It’s attributed to the Resveratrol substance in the red wines that French and other European peoples consume with their meals while Americans prefer soda.

Side Effects Interfering with Birth Control

Red wines typically contain 3 to 13 mg of Resveratrol per bottle. Most over-the-counter Resveratrol food supplements have Resveratrol from grape skin or from the Japanese Knotweed seed extracts and come in pill or liquid form having concentrations of 1 gram or more per pill or dose.

While most of its health benefits are clear while others still under clinical investigation, using pharmaceutical Resveratrol food supplements have their side effects. One of them is the possible interference with birth control.

Resveratrol is chemically structured similar to that of synthetic estrogen diethyulstilbestrol that mimic the effect of estrogen in the body. It has phytoestrogens or plant hormones contained in the substance which is known to counter the effects of birth control inducing substances. Just about all Resveratrol supplements have a caution on its label not to be taken by people below the age of 18 and by pregnant and nursing women.

But there are no conclusive reports to indicate any adverse or negative side effects when taking Resveratrol supplements. Until then, while it may be a good idea to consider it as a daily supplement to your diet regimen, caution should be exercised for women taking birth control medication.
